For more than five years, students from American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) have been rotating through Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) for their clinical training. This clinical education partnership has been a win-win for both institutions, with AUC students gaining excellent preparation for residency, and NUMC having the opportunity to train and evaluate potential future residents for their hospital.
Now the partnership has resulted in something that will benefit resident physicians, faculty, students, and patients for years to come. With funding provided by AUC, NUMC has completed a $700,000 renovation of the Dr. Peter Addiego Health Sciences Library. The two-story, 12,000 square foot library now features conference rooms equipped with interactive white boards, video conferencing, and distance learning capabilities.
“AUC develops mutually rewarding education partnerships with quality teaching sites like NUMC to provide clinical rotation opportunities for our students,” said Heidi Chumley, MD, executive dean and chief academic officer at AUC. “These partnerships provide much needed support to enhance academic infrastructure and technology, hire residents and teaching fellows, renovate facilities, and support indigent care, among other needs. We are delighted to play our part in the renovation of the fantastic library at NUMC.”
The original library, constructed in the early 1970s, is now up to the technological and architectural standards required for it to serve as a medical education and biomedical research hub.
“We are proud of the library renovations that will serve to improve the quality of medical education for our residents, faculty, students and nurses,” said Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president and chief medical officer at NUMC. “We are grateful to AUC for their funding which will help to support patient care, research and education for hundreds of students and residents at one of Long Island’s largest medical libraries.”
At any given time there are between 75 to 100 AUC students completing their third-year core clinical clerkships and fourth-year elective rotations at NUMC – making NUMC one of the largest populations of AUC students at one hospital. NUMC is also home to AUC alumni who hold residency positions in areas such as general surgery, internal medicine, radiology, and obstetrics and gynecology.
“AUC students have become part of our medical community,” said Walerstein. “We look forward to many more AUC students training, learning and practicing at NUMC in the future. We expect our partnership to continue for years to come.”
Founded in 1935, NUMC serves as a major teaching campus of the Health Science Center of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and is affiliated with the North Shore LIJ Health System. The 530-bed tertiary care teaching hospital is part of a 1,200-bed health care system, with a 589-bed A. Holly Patterson skilled nursing facility and six community health centers located throughout Nassau County.
