American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) welcomed the May 2013 class during the White Coat Ceremony held on May 10th on the AUC campus. This rite of passage marks their entry into the medical profession as “physicians-in-training.”

“I am extremely proud of our students who have reached this important milestone,” said Heidi Chumley, MD, AUC executive dean and chief academic officer and keynote speaker for the evening. Dr. Chumley also emphasized her belief in the incoming’s class ability to become top physicians and community leaders. Ronald Testa, PhD, dean of medical sciences at AUC, applauded “the tremendous sacrifice, passion and resilience exhibited by our arriving first semester students as they dedicate and pledge their life to the field of medicine.”At the ceremony, fifth semester students were inducted into the Alpha Omega Phi Honor and Service Society. Student speaker Fernando Diaz reminded his fellow inductees of the tremendous sacrifice of time they will continue to make as they transition into clinical rotations, saying, “We are about to enter a profession that is so much about providing for others.”

“Our White Coat Ceremony provides the ideal opportunity to come together as a community and simultaneously celebrate the successes of our top performing fifth semester learners while welcoming the fifth semester student into the AUC family,” said Dr Testa.
