Dimitriy Golovyan, MD has been awarded the First Place prize in the poster category of the annual scientific meeting of the New York chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP). Dr. Golovyan, graduated from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) in May 2012. He shared the award with Rabab Hajaj, MD, an internal medicine resident at NUMC.
Their poster, entitled “Atrial Septal Defect Causing Underestimation of Mitral Regurgitation in a Severely Symptomatic Patient,” highlighted the critical role played by transesophageal echocardiography in the identification of subtle intracardiac lesions and the assessment of patients with dyspnea on exertion that is unexplained by other modalities. A missed atrial septal defect may impact appropriate and timely management of patients with symptomatic mitral regurgitation. Delayed treatment may result in right outflow track remodeling and lead to residual pulmonary hypertension.
Drs. Golovyan and Hajaj have been invited to present at the national ACP meeting in San Francisco, California in April 2013.
