Students, faculty, and AUC family members came together last Saturday for our second Community Action Day of 2017. The event placed 238 volunteers at 13 service-learning projects throughout St. Maarten—many in collaboration with community partners like SXM Paws, Little League Player Development SXM, and the White and Yellow Cross Foundation. In total, the AUC community invested 705 hours into the day’s events.

Community Action Day continues to be an important way for our campus to engage with and give back to the island of St. Maarten. The event has grown to include a variety of activities: trail and beach clean-up efforts, public health presentations, HIV and breast abnormality screenings, youth tutoring and play, gardening and facility rehabilitation, and zoo and animal shelter clean-up and maintenance. Several colleagues from our Coral Gables office were also able to join and document the day’s events for a future video series.

Local news featured a handful of our Community Action Day projects, including the HIV screening event with the St. Maarten AIDS Foundation in Philipsburg and the breast abnormalities screening project led by Dr. Naira Chobanyan. A special thank you to the Student Volunteer Committee and to Dr. Golden Jackson, Assistant Dean for Service-Learning and Community Affairs for organizing another successful event!
