Claire Pomeroy, MD, MBA, president and CEO of the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation, will address incoming American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) students during the university’s White Coat Ceremony on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 4:00 pm in the Auditorium.
This event marks the entree of matriculating students into the profession and commemorates the high standards of medicine. In the presence of friends and families, students will be cloaked by deans and faculty members in their first white coat—a symbol of the trust being bestowed upon them to carry on the tradition of doctoring.
Dr. Pomeroy, a champion of research and social justice in medicine, is recognized as one of the earliest advocates of targeted interventions to address social determinants of health. As an HIV doctor in the 1980s, she treated stigmatized HIV/AIDS patients and emerged as a voice for equitable health care and health status for the LGBT community. At the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation, a nonprofit organization in New York, Dr. Pomeroy is responsible for advancing the foundation’s mission to improve health by accelerating support for medical research through recognition of research, excellence, public education, and advocacy. Every year, the foundation presents the Lasker Awards to scientists, physicians, and public servants who have made major progress in understanding, diagnosing, treating, curing, and preventing human disease worldwide.
Dr. Pomeroy earned her doctor of medicine from the University of Michigan and completed her residency and fellowship training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the University of Minnesota. She has held faculty positions at the University of Minnesota, University of Kentucky, and the University of California, Davis where she served as dean of the school of medicine from 2005 to 2013.
